We Discover AnPan Man!
Sunday, May 7, 2006 — Day 2 in Japan
After lunch at Bamiyan, the new boss invited us to his house for desert. I rode home with his wife while the Boss and Husband took the kids to the local bakery and brought home a neat selection of individually wrapped desserts — cheesecake, apple pie, and strawberry shortcake. This dessert store, called Fujiya, is like nothing you’ve ever seen. It’s almost like entering Disney Land. It’s bright pink and yellow with gorgeous displays of delectable desserts of every kind.
We also received our very first introduction to Anpan Man when Ed purchased an Anpan Man tin of cookies and candy for each of the girls. Anpan Man is a famous Japanese cartoon character who feeds the malnourished with his face. His face is a sweetened bun filled with anko paste, a sweet red bean paste! He is an absolutely bizarre character, but at the same time, is so cute and utterly lovable! I’ve come to notice that you cannot enter a store anywhere without seeing something with AnPan Man’s face on it. Because of this, he has become one of our favorite icons of Japanese culture. We have even purchased one of his cartoon shows, and though it’s entirely in Japanese, the kids absolutely love to watch it!
After several hours of a nice visit with the boss, his wife and their three sons, they drove us all back to Army Lodging and we settled in for the night. It was a great day!
